The Best Wingfoil Spots, the Rise in Popularity of this sport
Appearing on our beaches in 2019, wingfoiling has only grown in popularity since then. Although it is similar to windsurfing and kitesurfing, wingfoiling is certainly less physically demanding than windsurfing and less risky than kitesurfing.
Everyone is getting into it! Windsurfers, kitesurfers, surfers, whether already expert or beginners, as well as newcomers to watersports…wingfoiling appeals to everyone and is now known worldwide! It’s hard not to be captivated by the sight of someone flying just above the water with only a wing in hand! Perhaps it’s the right time to plan a wingfoil trip and really get into it or improve your skills…
And let’s not forget that wingfoil equipment is now easily available in surf shops, that a second-hand market is well-established, and that all our centers are equipped with the best Duotone gear.
Wondering which wingfoil destinations are the best? Here they are:
Karpathos – Greece – Perfect Conditions for Wingfoiling at Any Level
Karpathos, a Greek island located in the Aegean Sea, has become a must-visit destination for wingfoil enthusiasts, a sport we were the first to introduce here. Known for its consistent wind conditions and crystal-clear waters, Karpathos offers three different spots for beginners and advanced riders. Chicken Bay, a paradise for beginners, offers flat, turquoise waters perfect for safe learning. Gun Bay, where our ION CLUB Karpathos center is located, offers sessions for advanced riders and has the Anemos restaurant, ideal for lunch or dinner after a day on the water. For strong wind enthusiasts, launch from Gun Bay and ride the powerful winds of Devil’s Bay. The Meltemi is a summer wind that blows over Greece and the Aegean Sea from May to October, peaking in July and August. Opt for a wingfoil trip in Karpathos, you won’t be disappointed!
Tarifa – Spain – A Wingfoil Paradise
Tarifa, in southern Spain, has long been known and recognized by windsurfing and kitesurfing enthusiasts. This makes it an ideal playground for wingfoiling too, thanks to favorable wind conditions all year round and pleasant temperatures without long flights. The Tarifa region is one of the best wingfoil spots in the world!
Wingfoiling is mainly practiced on Valdevaqueros beach, near Las Dunas, where our ION CLUB Tarifa center is located. Here, the wind is the most consistent, and the water conditions are suitable for all levels of wingfoilers: from April to October, the dominant wind is the Levante (side-side offshore) with sometimes choppy seas but fewer waves than in autumn-winter when the Poniente returns (side-side onshore).
Other wingfoil spots exist around Tarifa, though launching can be a bit less easy than at Valdevaqueros, but it’s almost impossible to be disappointed because Tarifa is a paradise for wind lovers!
Le Morne – Mauritius – Ideal for Wave Wingfoil Enthusiasts
In the Indian Ocean lies a gem named Le Morne, perfect for wingfoiling most of the year, mainly from April to November, in the southwest of Mauritius. And ION CLUB Le Morne is there, located on a beautiful white sandy beach with clear waters!
Regardless of your level, this incredible wingfoil destination accommodates everyone from beginners to experts, but the most exciting part for many riders is the different wave spots.Â
Depending on your wing level, you can ride quality waves of varying difficulty.
Little Reef, right in front of our ION CLUB center and just a few meters away, is the easiest wave, perfect for learning to wingfoil in waves. Much further out, Manawa is for more advanced wave riders. The wave is bigger but remains relatively safe with a significant depth of water. For experts in both wingfoiling and wave riding, One Eye is the spot, but always inform someone before heading there due to the shallow water and strong currents, especially since this wave breaks far from the beach.
Yes, Le Morne is a dream destination for wingfoiling!
Cabarete – Dominican Republic – A Great Mix for Beginner Wingfoilers and Wave Riders
In the heart of the Caribbean, the small Dominican village of Cabarete is an incredible place for watersports enthusiasts. Its reputation is well established, and it’s almost a mandatory stop for any wingfoiler! The advantage of this wingfoil haven is that the spot offers multiple riding conditions for everyone. Completely opposite levels can practically meet at the same place.
ION CLUB Cabarete, the first IWO certified center in the island, decided to expand its wingfoil equipment to truly become a center for this activity. The potential to progress here is big! Our center is located in front of the big and beautiful lagoon that allows riding on flat and choppy water, but also in easy waves if you decide to ride a bit further, with sufficiently deep water. Cabarete is undoubtedly one of the must-visit wingfoil spots and you don’t need to bring a full wetsuit, a bikini or a shorty is enough!
Egypt – Safaga – The Best Place to Learn Wingfoiling
Practicing wingfoiling on a sea with temperatures between 25 and 30 degrees year-round is not a myth but a reality! On the shores of the Red Sea, specifically in Safaga, the Egyptian spot is probably one of the best places in the world to learn and improve wingfoiling. In addition to the turquoise colors of clear and flat water, the wind is consistent, usually between 15 and 25 knots, perfect for wingfoiling. Our ION CLUB Safaga center is located just a few meters from the water in the best area for watersports so you can enjoy your best wingfoiling holidays in peace, flying and riding on your board… Note that the best season to ride the Read Sea is from April to October.
The wingfoil adventure has now become more than a trend… it’s a true passion for some and especially a full-fledged watersport! There are a lot of must-visit wingfoil spots, whether in Morocco at Dakhla Lassarga, White Dune Canyon, or Essaouira, in the Canaries such as Fuerteventura, or in Cape Verde… essentially everywhere on our dear planet! The best wingfoil spot will mainly be the one best suited to your level, whether you are a beginner or an experienced wave rider, the key is to find your happiness without scaring yourself, respecting others and, of course, the navigation areas, whether near your home or on a dream wingfoil trip!
