ION CLUB GOLF DE ROSES
The Best of Surfing Elements
Location : Golf de Roses, Girona, Spain
Season : 23 March – 3rd November 2024
Opening hours: Daily 10:30 – 18.00
Golf de Roses is undoubtedly THE windsurf, kitesurf and wingfoil spot on the Costa Brava in the north of Spain. A spot where the Tramontana, a north/northwest wind from the Pyrenees, and the constant sea breeze during the summer months blow regularly. The long sandy Bay of Roses, on the Mediterranean coast, only 30 km south of the French border has been a favorite spot for windsurfers and kitesurfers for decades … and of course, now wingfoilers.
The ION CLUB Golf de Roses center, at the southern end of the bay, is located between the villages of Sant Pere Pescador and L'Escala, more precisely in the Camping & Bungalow Resort La Ballena Alegre Costa Brava. Every year this campsite hosts the World Cup of Windsurfing, which takes place right next to our ION CLUB center.

A WORD FROM THE MANAGER
For us, Golf de Roses is the ideal destination for the whole family, and without a doubt my favorite place to see the wind blowing on the wild coast from Cap de Creus!
Thanks to the coastal way between France and Barcelona, there are great walks and bike rides to explore in the area, and as nature thinks of everything, there are also small coves to rest in during your journey. Water parks and skydiving, wine tasting, golf … the Costa Brava has so much to offer! In the Spanish hinterland, the Pyrenees mountain range is a real natural sports ground for all kinds of mountain activities like trekking, canoeing, climbing, downhill cycling and of course winter sports. Not to be missed: The culinary quality of the “Pà amb Tomaquet amb Anxoves” in L’Escala, a local specialty.
Our center in Golf de Roses, one of the two ION CLUB centers in Spain, offers a multitude of water sports activities. It is a kitesurfing, windsurfing and wingfoil school, and equipment rental for all three is available for everyone. Before the wind picks up, you should at least once during your stay rent a stand up paddle at the club and paddle with the sunrise!

the spot in Golf de roses
Golf de Roses is not only a perfect destination for a family holiday, but it is also an ideal setting for couples and groups of friends. It is undoubtedly the best spot in the whole of Spanish Catalonia. Several sandbanks make the place a shallow water spot over a large area. The fine sandy beach in front of our ION CLUB center is huge and leaves plenty of space for all riders.
In the morning, when the wind is light, the spot is so accessible that it becomes a real paradise for children and beginners in windsurfing, kitesurfing or wingfoil courses. Our professional instructors will always be there to supervise your children from the age of 6 upwards. Lightweight rigs and large stable boards from our ION CLUB center will make their first rides really enjoyable. Thanks to the side wind, no one can drift out to sea, and in any case our lifeboat is always ready in case of an incident.
Here at Golf de Roses, beginners, intermediate levels and more experienced riders can easily progress. During the high season months of July and August, signs and buoys clearly mark the areas where you can do the board sports you love so much! Wingfoil, windsurfing and kitesurfing can be practiced in well-defined areas so that swimmers and beachgoers do not disturb your session. A separate place for swimmers and bathers is also provided.
Since the summer of 2018, ION CLUB Golf de Roses has opened a new windsurfing center called PRO CENTER.
This new PRO CENTER club is open during the months of July and August from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm, dedicated only to windsurfing and wingfoil. It is located about 5 minutes walk from the main ION CLUB center which is focused on kitesurfing, stand up paddle and also windsurfing lessons for beginners in the morning. There is a surf shop on site.
When the thermal wind picks up usually between noon and 2pm, windsurfers and wingfoilers sail in a separate area from the kitesurfers, which makes our spot even safer. During high season, all windsurfing and wingfoil activities, including lessons and equipment rental, take place at the PRO CENTER.
You will have understood that ION CLUB Golf de Roses is not an ordinary club … it is a center where everything is possible for the practice of windsurfing, kitesurfing, wingfoil and paddle board rental, adults and children, from beginners to advanced.

WIND
During the warmer months in summer a fairly reliable thermal wind from the southeast is the dominant wind in the Bay of Roses. The Tramontana, a north/northwest wind, blows mainly during the colder months, but it can also show up in the middle of summer for several days, and can reach 25-30 knots. In front of the center of the ION CLUB Golf de Roses, in summer the wind often blows sideshore, coming from the left when looking at the sea. In the morning there is usually only a gentle wind, offering perfect conditions for children and beginners in windsurfing and kitesurfing courses. In the afternoon, this thermal wind increases, quite often reaching 20-25 knots, and the most experienced windsurfers, kitesurfers and wingfoilers can finally indulge their passion. Windsurfing courses to master the jibe or practice water start, and also wingfoil courses for all levels take place in the afternoons.
WAVES
Occasionally, waves of varying heights are formed near the shore. However, as a rule, the water is flat or choppy between May and October.

HOW TO GET THERE ?
From Barcelona or Girona

WHAT TO DO AROUND GOLF DE ROSES ?
Cap de Creus
Cap de Creus is one of the most surprising places in the Costa Brava. It is a real paradise with a mixture of sea and mountain landscapes that will amaze you. Even if you feel like you’re at the end of the world and can’t go any further, you can still get there by car. To get in tune with the breathtaking Cap de Creus, follow the old path that goes from Cadaqués to the lighthouse. During the first part of the walk, which is not necessarily the most interesting, walk along the roads, but once you arrive at Port Lligat, the magic happens. Contemplate the beaches of Sant Luís and La Guillola, the lands where there are abandoned vineyards and, finally, the famous local lighthouse. For the return journey, some people prefer to go only by road, while others mix road and path. In total, it is more or less four hours of walking for the whole route, but every minute is worth it.
Castell de Montgrí
Be fascinated by the spectacular views from the castle of Montgrí (ideal for watching the sunrise or sunset), after a short hike. It is perched at an altitude of 315 meters.
The castle of Montgrí is a historical building in the village of Torroella de Montgrí, and was built between 1294 and 1304. It was built after the conflict between the Counts of Empúries – who ruled over most of the area around the village – and the Count of Barcelona, the most powerful in Catalonia at that time, who also had great power over the Mediterranean. In order to control the movements of the counts of Empúries, the court of Barcelona ordered Bernat de Llabià, governor of the royal town of Torroella de Montgrí, to supervise the construction of the fortress, which was built on top of the mountain of Montgrí. Work began in 1294, but the fortress was never completed, as can be seen today. After 1304, the fortress lost its strategic value but became a symbol of the region.
Gerona – Oldtown
Girona is located between Barcelona and France. The old town of Girona is a must see, authentic with its medieval walls, narrow and winding streets and the Jewish quarter El Call, one of the best preserved in Europe. The small streets are very pleasant to stroll through. Visit the Passeig de la Muralla, also known as the “Girona Wall”. It was once a strategic place to defend the city from invaders. Now you can walk around and enjoy a beautiful view from the top of the ancient city.
Via Ferrata – Sant Feliu de Guixols
The Via Ferrata Cala del Molí is one of the few trails in the world that runs along the coastline and the only one in Europe above the sea. It is located in the municipality of Sant Feliu de Guíxols, in the heart of the Costa Brava. The way is marked out with steel cables and steps, nails and chains, as well as several suspension bridges to go from one vertical wall to another. There are 3 Tibetan bridges, 2 Nepalese bridges and 1 wooden bridge.
